It’s still only May but it looks and feels like Summer
It’s still only May but it looks and feels like summer around the Mount Washington Valley and on the Saco River. Air temps are around the 80s and water temps are in the mid to upper 60s. Water levels on the Saco River
Water levels on the Saco River can vary quite a bit depending on which section you choose to paddle and the overall conditions of the season. As we get later into the summer months and early fall, river levels tend to be at the lowest point. Not to worry, however, there is plenty of good paddling around the Saco if you keep a few things in mind. Saco Bound to Weston’s & the Pig Farm trips are of the most consistent with regard to water levels. There are almost no rocks and a sandy river bottom with few obstructions. This segment holds water better and is perfect for tubing, families, and novice paddlers. Sure it’s slower late summer but still really fun! Generally speaking, as you go higher up the Saco River Valley, (predominantly northwest) water levels will be lower….
Labor Day Weekend
Here it is, Labor Day Weekend and the big storm has come and gone. Irene packed a punch and certainly left her mark. The Saco reached some of the highest levels in years. There are many segments of river that are now very good for recreational paddling, however. One of the best sections is the segment from Saco Bound to Walkers Bridge. The levels along this stretch are within recreational parameters. The lower river from the Old Course of the Saco in Fryeburg through Brownfield remains high. There may be many obstacles including several fallen trees especially along the upper segments of the Saco. Use caution and understand conditions before you go. Watch out for any additional rainfall over the next several days. For updated conditions call Saco Bound 603 447-2177.
Why don’t more people go skiing in the spring?
Why don’t more people go skiing in the spring? The sun is high, temps are usually great for outdoor activity and the snow is soft. Why more people don’t ditch the big, puffy parka, head to the hills, and rip some big GS turns on the corn snow is beyond me. Such is the case with paddling in the fall. Conditions are usually awesome through October but there is hardly anyone out there. We are starting to see a bit of color on the maples along the river and conditions right now are perfect. As the leaves turn, the brilliant colors reflect off the water making for a fantastic experience. Take a day trip on the river and leaf peep from a canoe. The perspective is unbelievable with no traffic and a tranquil environment to soak it all in. Now,…

So nice that spring is here. Well, I think it’s spring anyway. The Saco remains a bit high and cold from snowmelt up around Mount Washington and the Presidentials. Don’t worry, however, the warm days that we all love on the Saco River tubing, kayaking, and just hanging out are not too far away. ON sale in our store are many Royalex canoes including Campers, Packs and more. Yes, we have Royalex boats!

It was a great weekend for Saco River Trips
It was a great weekend for Saco River Trips. The river is at a great level for canoeing & kayaking. It’s still a little chilly for Saco River Tube trips as of yet. We did get a little taste of summer. Air temps were in the upper 70s and temps near 50. There are some beaches coming out and we did run overnight trips. The trees are starting to explode with buds as the landscape greens up. It is just beautiful out there right now!
Saco River
One of the coolest things about the Saco River is the ability to camp on sandbars and beaches as you make your way downstream. This is such a great privilege as generous landowners have agreed to let people use their property for recreation. There are several rules that paddlers need to understand before setting camp. The section of the Saco from Swans Falls in Fryeburg, Maine to the take out in Hiram, Maine, (just above the Rte 117 bridge) is the only section where this agreement is in place. You’re allowed to camp on UNPOSTED sandbars and beaches only. Remember, you are a guest. So be gracious and respectful.
